Back to School BBQ Party Ideas

It’s that time of year again! Time for the kids to put on their backpacks and head back to school. With all the hustle and bustle of the season, it can be a nice break to throw a back to school barbecue or party for all your neighbors and friends. Check out these tips and tricks on how to pull off an amazing back to school party.

See if you can come up with a fun name for your party such as “School Year’s Eve Party” and put this on your invitation along with the basic information such as the address of the event venue. To save time, head to your nearest copy machine and print out the invites yourself.

Deck out your event space with all kinds of back to school decorations. For example, make a bunch of pencil vases and fill them with white peony flowers or your favorite type of flower. Create a sign or banner to hang above the food table or near the entryway that says “Back to School Party.” One cute idea is to use string, clothespins, and card stock to make your party sign. Set your tables with bright red plates reminiscent of red apples. On the top of each plate you could even tie up a bundle of 2-3 pencils with a label around them that says “You’re so sharp” to give to your guests.

The food is often the highlight of a party, so make sure to take the time to tie in your back to school theme to some of your food items. Here are some ideas to get you going.

Serve classic after school snacks as appetizers at your back to school party. Some ideas include:

    • Ham and Apple Wraps with Dip
    • Crunchy Caramel Corn
    • Ants on a Log: Celery Sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or for a unique twist, try adding cream cheese and other dried fruits.
    • Cheddar Balls and Crackers with Grapes

For kids, think strawberry milk, lemonade, and smoothies. You could even serve a carbonated punch using soda water, pomegranate juice and other fruits. If your party is for adults as well, make some sangria or serve cocktails using vodka infused with Jolly Rancher candies (use your carbonated punch as a mixer).

    Lunch / Dinner

Don’t focus too much on tying the theme in with your main dishes, just serve tasty food that everyone will enjoy, such as:

    • Turkey cutlets
    • Shrimp salad
    • Chicken Wraps
    • Buffalo Chicken Salad
    • Burgers
    • Dogs

Desserts are easier to get creative with as far as tying in the back to school theme. For example, you could serve the following desserts at your back-to-school party:

    • Cupcakes with Crayon Candles
    • Caramel Apple Slices and Gummy Worms
    • Alphabet Cookies
    • School Bus Shaped Cake
    • Apple Cake Pops
    • Apple-Shaped Mini Apple Pies

Make sure you keep your guests entertained by having plenty of music to play during your party. As a tip, sprinkle in a bunch of songs with lyrics about school and growing up. Here are a few songs to help you with your playlist.

    • "ABC" by Jackson 5
    • "All Falls Down" by Kanye West
    • "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2" by Pink Floyd
    • "Be Chrool to Your Scuel" by Twisted Sister
    • "Beauty School Drop Out" From "Grease"
    • "College Life" by Billy Murray
    • "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by The Police
    • "Education" by Pearl Jam
    • "Fifteen" by Taylor Swift
    • "Fools" by Van Halen
    • "Going Away to College" by Blink-182
    • "Graduate" by Third Eye Blind
    • “Growing Up” by Bruce Springsteen

    Gift Bags

Make some gift bags to give to your guests on the way out of your party. Stock them with things like apple-shaped post it notes, crazy erasers, stickers, and coloring books. You could also fill a small plastic craft box or a lunch box with crayons, markers, and pencils.
