Birthday Theme Parties: 50s

Iconic fashion, drive-in restaurants, huge shiny convertibles blasting rock and roll…what’s not to love about the 1950s? This classic decade continues to be a popular choice for birthday theme parties. Here are some ideas you can incorporate into your next 50s-themed party.

If you’re going to be renting out an event venue for your bash, consider finding a place that has a history from the 50s or was built in the decade! You could also decorate your space like a soda pop shop with black and white checkered floors, vinyl and metal chairs, and a jukebox to boot. Try hanging a few records on the wall and/or getting dinner plates that look like records to really bring home the theme. Anyone can throw a decades party but the event planners that look after all the small details are the ones who create truly memorable themes.

The birthday cake is one of the main elements of any birthday party. 50s-themed parties offer an awesome opportunity to have fun with the birthday cake style and decorations. You could have the cake look like a 1950s record player or jukebox. Alternatively, you could make it look like an entire soda pop shop with people dancing, a jukebox, and some ice cream shakes decorated around it.

If you’re hiring a DJ for the event make sure he or she has tons of 50s music to keep the party going. Otherwise, there are plenty of music streaming websites out there you can easily access for a worry-free music option, like Pandora or Spotify. As long as you have plenty of Elvis, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the like, your 50s party will go off without a hitch.

Burgers, fries, and shakes are classic food options when throwing a 50s birthday party. Don’t forget the Coca-Cola! You could have your favorite burger chain like In ‘n Out or a local burger joint provide food for the event. This may be a smart choice if your hosting it in a large event space with many guests. If you’re throwing the birthday bash in a home, you can simply grill up the burgers with a few friends. Offer veggie burgers and veggie platters for vegetarians and those watching their weight.
