How to Hire Entertainment & Performers for Your Event

Whether you want DJs, bands, belly dancers, or fire performers at your next party, it’s important that you do your research before hiring your talent to ensure there are no disasters on the night of your event. Check out our tips and tricks on how to hire an event performer.

1.    Ensure Proper Venue Licensing

The most popular type of entertainment bookings are live bands or DJs. They are a great source of entertainment for parties, weddings, and corporate events. If this is the route you want to take, check that your event venue has all the licenses required so that you are allowed to hire the band. Also, be sure to ask if they have any restrictions on noise level. If they do have noise restrictions, hiring a band may still be possible, but it’s probably best to opt for a quieter style act like a jazz band.

2.    Consider Entertainment Space & Power Needs

No matter what type of entertainment you choose, make sure the event venue has enough space and power. For example, if you hire a band with 3 or 4 members, they will need at least a 14 x 14 foot space. Most bands are flexible with the amount of performance space they need and are happy to accommodate your specific needs. Also, check with the venue manager about the power source to make sure it’s a safe and adequate supply. If necessary, you may need to rent an additional generator for your event.

3.    Allow Adequate Time for Your Entertainer or Performer to Set Up

Depending on where they will be in your event space, they will need to set up before your guests arrive to ensure they have everything they need for a successful performance. Be sure your event performer knows exactly when the event starts and when their call time is to ensure your event runs smoothly.

4.    Take Care of the Talent

Provide a break area for them to rest in between performances, and make sure to offer them refreshments and snacks. Some performers may also need a place to change into their stage attire, so if you're short on space, you could always make a dressing area in the corner of the break room.

5.    Consider Your Overall Budget

How much do you want to spend on talent? If they're going to be the main focal point of the event, then you may want to spend a little more money on a quality band or a solid performer that will really wow your guests. Finally, make sure you pay the band before the end of the night in their preferred method of payment.

6.    Hire Professional Event Performers

You may think this is a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many event planners try to save a buck by hiring amateur event performers. Hiring professionals will ensure that you’re giving your guests the best entertainment for the night. Conversely, you want a band, DJ, or other performers to take your event seriously and work hard to entertain your guests.

7.    Consider the Visual Impact of Your Entertainment

You’ve no doubt spent some time planning the decorations for your event, and it’s important to also consider how the entertainment will work into the overall décor. If you have stage decorations, just make sure they do not interfere with the band’s equipment or ability to play.
