Last Minute Kentucky Derby Party Guide

Written by Rachel Mazzola | Apr 13, 2021 1:30:00 PM

The Kentucky Derby is a historical racing event that has taken place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky since 1875. Traditionally, the event is held on the first Saturday of May and has some unique identifiers that everyone looks forward to each year, like mint juleps, derby hats, and the garland of roses. Looking to recreate the derby experience at home last minute to celebrate with family and friends? Check out our suggestions for planning your own Kentucky Derby.

Food & Drinks

It’s a no-brainer to serve mint juleps at your Kentucky Derby party. If you are celebrating virtually be sure to send this recipe out to your guests beforehand.

Woodford Reserve Classic Mint Julep

Ingredients

2 oz. Woodford Reserve® (or another Bourbon of your choice)

1/2 oz. Simple Syrup

3 Fresh Mint Leaves

Crushed Ice

Preparation

Muddle the mint inside the glass to help release some of the oils.  To the same glass, add simple syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice.  Stir. Garnish with more ice and fresh mint.

In addition to this traditional drink, you’ll also want some southern cooking to help celebrate the day. You can check out these recipes by the Churchill Downs Executive Chef David Danielson for some meal inspiration.

If you don’t want to bother with cooking or are having socially distanced celebrations at your own houses, try finding a local restaurant that is doing a special Kentucky Derby menu or your favorite spot for some good ol’ fashioned comfort foods.

Decorations

Now that your food & drinks are taken care of, you can focus on the ambiance. Since your party is last minute you may not have time to go out and get specific derby decorations. Instead, decorate  with the official colors of the Kentucky Derby, red & gold. Don’t forget to get some roses and use them to decorate your table to symbolize the Garland of Roses.

If you’re celebrating virtually, get a fun Kentucky Derby Background for zooms - like this one of the winner’s circle or this one of Derby Day Plaza.

What to Wear

The derby is just as much about fashion as it is about racing, and who doesn’t love getting dressed up for a party?. When you think of Derby fashion, you think of colorful dresses, big hats, and sear sucker suits. Here are some outfit suggestions:

Women: Bright colored sundresses (think Lilly Pulitzer or vineyard vines) and a hat (wide

brimmed or more subtle - your choice!)

Men: Searsucker suit (or slacks and a button-up),& a bow tie, in pastel colors, bold stripes, or plaid.

Wagering Games

Even if you’re not betting on the races, there are still some fun wagering games you can play with family and friends for bragging rights - use these games here to have some fun or to generate some inspiration to make up your own!

Where to Watch

Most importantly - you’re going to want to have the Derby on! Races start around 11:00 AM and can be viewed on NBCSN but the main event starts taking place approximately around 6 PM and can be seen on NBC. Now pour yourself another mint julep and get ready for the most exciting two minutes in sports history!
