Prom Dress After Prom: What to do With Your Dress

Now that you have celebrated prom with 10 Unique Things To Do Before Prom and 10 Unique Things to Do After Prom it's time to look back and reflect on how prom was the best night of your life and you have memories that will last you a lifetime - but now comes the question that has plagued girls for years, what do you do with your prom dress? Unfortunately, most prom dresses will age out of style or are too formal to be worn again.  If you’re like me you’ll get it dry cleaned and put it away in your closet, and then six years later your mom will call and ask you what you want her to do with your old prom dress. Whether you are looking to save it, get rid of it, or reuse it - here are some ideas of what to do with it!

Alter It

Having your dress altered is a great way to get more wear out of it. Try having it shortened, remove the embellishments, or using the fabric to create a different piece entirely. Take your dress to a local tailor and see what ideas they have to make it a piece that you can wear regularly and still cherish.

Sell It

Try selling your dress on a website like Poshmark or ThredUp. Prom dresses are too expensive to only be worn once, so try to get some of that investment back. The money can go towards your savings or college textbooks and school supplies, fun!

Donate It

As I’ve said, prom dresses are expensive - and for many, it would be a luxury to purchase a brand new one. Pay it forward and donate your dress to someone who needs it. There are many organizations such as Becca's Closet that will take dress donations and distribute them to those in need. You will be giving someone who may have decided not to attend prom because it was too expensive a chance to go.

Hand It Down

Like donating, but to someone you know. Hand your dress down to a family member, friend, or neighbor who might have envied how good you looked at your prom! It will be fun to compare your prom photos side by side in the same dress! (Plus they might even give it back to you once they are done and you can keep it!).

Keep It

They say that a prom is an event we will remember for the rest of our lives. Whether or not you will be laughing at your prom dress in 10 years, it may be the perfect item to hold onto for a keepsake. You never know when it will come in handy - another formal event, a prom theme party, or even as a Halloween costume.

Destroy the Dress

Maybe your prom wasn’t the magical night of your life you imagined it to be. Or maybe you want to get creative and have a little fun. Set up a photoshoot to trash or “Destroy the Dress”. Whether you use colorful smoke, paint, or head to the beach and get sandy - it’s a fun way to have one final photoshoot with your fancy dress.
